Our streets are coming alive!

The City of Johannesburg has planned some great events for this October, which has been named Transport Month 2012.

This Sunday sees the first “Streets Alive” event, in which certain roads in Orlando will be closed to vehicles but open to pedestrians and cyclists. With the understanding that streets are public spaces that belong to all – not just cars – residents and visitors are encouraged to use the streets for all manner of activities, including playing traditional games, meeting friends and neighbours, even aerobics!

The route starts from Mandela’s House on Vilakazi Street and extends down to Dowling Road in Wesbury. The roads will be closed to traffic between 9am and 1pm both this Sunday (14th) and on the 28th, and many activities will be planned along the route to get involved in.

The Johannesburg Urban Cyclists Assocation (JUCA) will also be there and is hosting a Bike Polo event at the Orlando Stadium this Sunday between 10am and 1pm. Everyone is welcome – just bring a bike! For more info call 071 637 7755

Also planned for the 17th October is a public transport adventure, in which teams of 4 are sent on a treasure-hunt style race across Joburg, using only public transport to make their way to a final meeting point.  Participation is free, and you’re encouraged to get involved!  For more information contact: transportmonthevents@joburg.org.za or Khomotso Ratlabala, khomotsora@joburg.org.za, 011 870 4552.

Time to get out of your car and enjoy the streets!
