Welcome to the Joburg Green Map!

We’re about to change how you see Joburg! No longer content with Joburg just being ‘the place of gold’, we’re mapping out the city from a green perspective, giving you a great tool to make greener lifestyle choices and more informed decisions about living sustainably.

Mapping the city

Our map of green resources is available online right here and will be a constant work in progress. It’s taking shape as you read this with a just a few initial green sites already listed. More sites will be added as people like you suggest a green site or our mapmakers find other green spaces, biodiversity hot spots, recycling projects and drop-offs, sustainable living projects, alternative energy sites, local green markets and eateries, green accommodation, eco products and services, green attractions and alternative energy sites – just to mention a few!

Working together with the City of Joburg and other interested parties, we’ll be adding a number of nature reserves, green spaces and biodiversity hot spots all within the city's parameters so that Joburgers and visitors to the city can green their weekends and days out.

A printed version of Joburg Green Map will be produced in the coming months, to become a handy easy reference for visitors to Joburg and for those without easy internet access.

Regional and international collaboration

Sustainability doesn’t happen in isolation, and with that understanding, the Joburg Green Map is part of a bigger green picture.  Locally we work closely with our sister site, Cape Town Green Map, which has been successfully mapping the City of Cape Town for the past 3 years and at current counts lists 430 green sites! We’ll continue to work together, with the aim being to get even more cities across South African involved.

Internationally, both Cape Town and Joburg are part of the Open Green Map – a social mapmaking network that has successfully published more than 500 printed Green Maps across the world in over 65 countries. Being part of the global Open Green Map community means that our map becomes available to millions more interested in green living, and makes use of globally accepted iconography for green resources.

A green community

Not only do we want to bring you our green map, but though this website and our facebook & twitter accounts, we’re going to give you handy advice and articles on how to live a greener life plus you know about upcoming events and latest news.

And we want to hear from you! We want you to get involved and help us grow the green community in Joburg. We encourage you to register on this website and suggest your favourite green site, or send us your news and events.

Together we can green the city. Let’s do it!
